What Is SEO / Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization is the practice of increasing online visibility in search engine results pages. SEO is the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic to a website or web page from search engines. SEO targets unpaid traffic (known as ” organic traffic) rather than direct traffic or paid traffic. Unpaid traffic may originate from different kinds of searches, including image search, video search, academic search, news search, and industry-specific vertical search.

As an internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, the computer-programmed algorithms that dictate search engine behavior, what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines, and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. SEO is performed because a website will receive more visitors from a search engine when websites rank higher on the search engine results page (SERP). These visitors can then potentially be converted into customers.

Whether you’re launching a new product, building a web presence for your retail location, or starting a dropshipping business, when you’re trying to sell online you have an important problem to solve: how do you get customers to find your store? People who find your online store in a search engine are probably looking for products like yours, so they are more likely to buy something. You can use search engine optimization (SEO) to improve the search engine ranking for your store and help customers find your products.

What’s likely interesting to you as a business owner or employee is how you can actually leverage SEO to help drive more relevant traffic, leads, sales, and ultimately revenue and profit for your business.

Basic SEO is all about common sense and simplicity. Also, having a website with rich content about your goods or services that are referenced by other websites is the key to gaining good search engine rankings, too. Ultimately, Major Search Engines aim to be helpful to the person who is searching, and the best way to do that is with useful content.

Google’s algorithm is extremely complex. It is looking for pages that contain high-quality, relevant information about the search query. They determine relevance by “crawling” (or reading) your website’s content and evaluating (algorithmically) whether that content is relevant to what the searcher is looking for, mostly based on the keywords it contains. They determine “quality” by a number of means, but prominent among those is still the number and quality of other websites that link to your page and your site as a whole.

Internal linking. It provides your audience with further reading options. As long as they’re relevant and you use clear anchor text (the clickable highlighted words in any given link). This can help reduce your bounce rates. It helps to improve your ranking for certain keywords. It helps Google crawl and index your site. Those little Googlebots that are sent out to fetch new information on your site will have a better idea of how useful and trustworthy your content is, the more they crawl your internal links.

Keyword Research & Keyword Targeting. The first step in search engine optimization is really to determine what it is you’re actually optimizing for. This means identifying the terms people are searching for (also known as “keywords”) that you want your website to rank for in search engines like Google. Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple. There are a few key factors to take into account when determining the keywords you want to target on your site:

Search Volume – The first factor to consider is how many people (if any) are actually searching for a given keyword. The more people there are searching for a keyword, the bigger the audience you stand to reach. Conversely, if no one is searching for a keyword, there is no audience available to find your content through search.

Relevance – Search engines try to provide the most relevant results to a searcher’s query. How search engines provide these results is down to their own internal algorithms but there are factors that you can be certain will influence these results and they’re all based on relevancy.

User Experience. There are many SEO benefits for providing the best possible user experience. You need an easily navigable, clearly searchable site with relevant internal linking and related content. All the stuff that keeps visitors on your webpage and hungry to explore further.

Content quality. Do you regularly publish helpful, useful articles, videos, or other types of media that are popular and well produced? Do you write for actual human beings rather than the search engine itself? Well, you should. The latest research on ranking factors indicates that Google is moving further towards longer-form content that understands a visitor’s intention as a whole, instead of using keywords based on popular search queries to create content.

Cross-device compatibility. If your site is driving (or could be driving) significant mobile traffic from search engines and how “mobile-friendly” your site is will impact your rankings on mobile devices, which is a fast-growing segment. In some niches, mobile traffic already outweighs desktop traffic.

What Is SEO / Search Engine Optimization?

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” In simple terms, it means the process of improving your site to increase its visibility when people search for products or services related to your business in Google, Bing, and other search engines. The better visibility your pages have in search results, the more likely you are to garner attention and attract prospective and existing customers to your business.

What are search engines NOT looking for?

There are many ‘black hat’ practices that can bring the full weight of a Google penalty down on your site, so it’s best to avoid doing the following, even if it looks like a brilliant easy win at the time. Avoid using black hat techniques to get organic search traffic from search engines or rankings. Don’t use spammy link-building tactics. Don’t try to trick Google into thinking you’re an authority site. Don’t buy backlinks. Don’t engage in any other shady SEO practices.

What is the most important factor in SEO digital marketing?

There is no one factor that is most important because they’re all important. If I had to pick something you should focus on, it would be providing quality information to people. You can have all the SEO pieces in place, but if your online content isn’t good, it doesn’t matter because people won’t be interested in you.

Why is SEO important for search engine marketing?

SEO is a fundamental part of digital marketing because people conduct trillions of searches every year, often with commercial intent to find information about products and services. Search is often the primary source of digital traffic for brands and complements other marketing channels. Greater visibility and ranking higher in search results than your competition can have a material impact on your bottom line.

    How does SEO work?

Search engines like Google and Bing use crawlers, sometimes also called bots or spiders, to gather information about all the relevant content they can find on the internet. The crawler starts from a known web page and follows internal links to pages within that site as well as external links to pages on other sites. The content on those pages, plus the context of the links it followed, helps the crawler understand what each page is about and how it’s semantically connected to all of the other pages within the search engine’s massive database, called an index.
